According to the Indian Independence Act 1947, on 15 August 1947 India became an independent dominion in the British Commonwealth of Nations known as the Union of India or the Dominion of India.
The office of Viceroy was abolished on independence, as had been customary under the British Raj. The King was represented by the Governor-General of India.
On 26 January 1950 India transformed into the Republic of India by the promulgation of the Constitution of India in 1950.
Two governors-generals held office between independence and India’s transformation into a republic: Louis Mountbatten, (1947–48) and Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (1948–50).
Not all was bad in the year 2020. With Humans Under Lockdown, Nature was On The Mend !
Looking back on 2020
2020 is the year when everything changed. The pandemic Covid-19 will be remembered as a turning-point of the century. With humans under lockdown, Global emissions were down by17% and the UN Environment Programme claimed 2020 to be a super year for nature and biodiversity. Wildlife got a chance to reclaim some of their lost space and human beings were able to give the environment a small but much needed break from pollution and over exploitation of natural resources.
The coronavirus pandemic was unparalleled, new and different and will be remembered as a turning-point of the century. Covid-19, social distancing, pandemic, corona, PPE, WFH, quarantine, isolation, super-spreader, asymptomatic, herd immunity became the common words of the year and the internet opened new avenues of growth far and wide.
The microbes on Earth would outnumber all the other flora and fauna on Earth and outweigh them as well.
Why do you wash your hands, and what exactly are you washing off?
You might answer germs. The four major types of germs are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. They can invade plants, animals, and people, and are the tiniest friends, and enemies, that we have!
As friends, trillions of microbes live in and on our body. Most of them don’t harm us at all. In fact, they help us digest food and protect us against infections. They help us in production of various food products and medicines.
As enemies these microbes can cause serious illness in us and all other plants and animals. They are agents of decay and decomposition of our foods, textiles and dwellings.
Why is 12th April selected as the International Day of Human Space Travel?
In 2011 on the 50th anniversary of the first ever human spaceflight, the United Nations, General Assembly declared 12 April as the ‘International Day of Human Space Flight’, to celebrate each year at the international level the beginning of the space era for mankind.
It was on April 12, 1961, that 27-year-old Yuri Gagarin a Soviet cosmonaut (a Russian astronaut) made the first human voyage into space on a spacecraft called the Vostok 1. He orbited around the planet before parachuting back down safely to Earth.
The entire flight took 1 hour and 48 minutes from launch to landing. Since 1961 it has also been celebrated as ‘Yuri’s Night’ worldwide.
